Budgeting for a Family with Twins

One child can be very expensive; in fact, current figures show that it can cost between $125,000 and $180,000 (depending on your income) to raise a child to the age of eighteen. Now, multiply that by two (if you're brave enough) and you can see what the figure is for raising twins. If you already have twins, you're probably saying, "So, tell me something I don't know!"

Okay, did you know that if you currently own your home, this might be a good time to consider a mortgage refinance? This applies to families with and without twins; however, families with twins may see an appreciable difference in their financial situation if they look into this.

If you do decide to refinance your mortgage, chances are that the rates you do it at will be lower than those that were in effect when you first took out your mortgage. Depending on how much lower they are, the savings in your monthly house payment alone may provide you with a fair amount of additional income.

If this turns out to be the case, take the opportunity that it affords to set up and stick to a budget. Don't make it so rigid that it is impossible to live on it, but be honest with yourself and decide which things can be eliminated.

You may find it helpful to use some of the money you save through a lower mortgage payment to pay off some smaller bills, such as a low credit card balance or other small payments. Once that is out of the way, it may be easier for you to set up a budget, as you will not have that additional expense to worry about. Just remember to make wise financial decisions with your extra money, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need to.
